Who was the biggest 2004 NFL Football off season acquisition?

While the 2004 NFL season started to wind down there were serious debates as to who was the #1 off-season acquisition. Many made strong arguments for Eagles WR Terrell Owens and others sided similarly for the Patriots RB Corey Dillon.

After a full regular season and through 2 weeks of NFL Playoffs it is obvious the answer is RB Corey Dillon. In the divisional round against the Indianapolis Colts, Dillon controlled the game for the Patriots and kept Peyton Manning off the field. Ironically it didn’t matter because Peyton and the Colts couldn’t get anything going against the Patriots near perfect defense.

A surprise candidate emerged in the debate as Mother Nature came clean on a deal she struck with New England Coach Bill Belichick. Over the last few years in the playoffs the Patriots have been blessed with horrible weather the week of the game, and in most cases on game day. Sure New England is known for bad weather in January but Mother Nature is still under investigation as you read this.

Many say it was cheating when the Patriots grounds crew didn’t cover the field and let the bad weather hit it all week. They finally covered it up the day before the game and when it was removed the field was covered in sheets and blocks of ice that were as big as 3 inches thick. They "tried their best" to clean the field up but it was horrible when the game started. This definitely gave the advantage to the Patriots and the game played out exactly that way.

I don't want to take any credit away from a completely excellent defensive performance by the Patriots, but don’t look for the same kind of game in the Indy-Dome! The answer is simple for Manning and the Colts. Smack the kicker in the mouth and make sure he makes his kicks. If Vanderjagt didn’t miss a mediocre kick against the Patriots, the Colts may have actually had the home field advantage. The Colts are obviously a better home team on the turf and would like a chance to show off their thoroughbred speed.

The Eagles are still getting it done even without WR Terrell Owens. Philadelphia and QB Donovan McNabb will face off against the Atlanta Falcons and superstar Mike Vick in what many are anticipating to be the most exciting NFL Championship game in years. Both teams feature top ranked defenses that make big plays and shut teams down. Both teams also feature superstar Quarterbacks that can beat you with Arms, Legs, and more. WR Terrell Owens made statements that he may be there but we doubt it.

In conclusion it appears the results to the debate are as follows.

1. Patriots - RB Corey Dillon
2. Patriots - Mother Nature
3. Eagles - WR Terrell Owens
